Our Public Service Roots
At Tradex, we’re proud of our long and successful history of serving the investment needs of public sector employees. Founded in 1960, Tradex is one of Canada’s oldest mutual fund companies. We’re 100% investor-owned and our service keeps growing year after year. Our board remains 90% public servants, Our advisors are very familiar with the Public Service Superannuation Plan (PSSP) and can help you build a plan that supplements it.
I have been a Tradex member since 1984, but I wish I had started even earlier. Like others in the foreign service, I became familiar with Tradex largely through word of mouth from fellow employees. The fact that Tradex was established on a completely volunteer basis by officers of the old Departments of External Affairs and Trade & Commerce and operated on an at-cost basis has always been very appealing to me.
When I joined the Department of Tra.de in 1962, Tradex was just two years old. The driving force behind its creation was Tom Fletcher who, at that time, was the Director General responsible for the Trade Commissioner Service. He later went on to become the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the Tourism Group. Tom saw Tradex as a great way for both his colleagues and himself to build a strong financial future and he volunteered a huge amount of time to Tradex.
You work hard for your money, so you should get your money working hard for you.
There are many ways to invest. Choosing the right financial instruments depends on your stage of life, your risk threshold, and your personal financial goals. Effective investing strikes a balance between the potential return you want with the level of reasonable risk you are prepared to accept. Investing isn’t a gamble. It’s a matter of making informed decisions and carefully managing your money. Many investments are also based on compounding interest, so it’s important as a public servant that you put your money to work as early as possible in order to make the most of it.
